WHO DG urges Africa Regional Committee to utilize FCTC

The WHO Director General, Dr Margaret Chan urged the Regional Committee for Africa at its 57th session on 27 August 2007, Congo- Brazzaville, to use the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) to ‘strengthen collective defenses against health threats that respect no borders.’

Tobacco Control and the New WHO Director-General

Margaret_chan_bio_1 ‘ We will scale up efforts to control tobacco, including full implementation of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control’  

That was the pledge made by Dr. Margaret Chan, the WHO Director-General elect in her acceptance speech on 9th November, 2006. Dr. Chan beat 12 other candidates to the post, including Dr. Julio Frenk, the Mexican Health Minister who entered into a controversial agreement with the tobacco industry in 2004.
