I am the Executive Director for the American Lung
Association of Washington, and have held this position for 12 years.
One of the Lung Association's primary goals in assuring lung health for
the people of Washington is reducing tobacco use. Our emphasis is on
reducing smoking initiation among kids. The Association's long-standing
mission is what led me to involvement in tobacco control.
Fernand is

May I ask you to introduce yourself ?
Fernand Turcotte: I am a medical specialist in preventive medicine
and public health. I have been trained at the Université de Montréal,
and Harvard University. I have joined the medical faculty of Université
Laval in 1971, teaching preventive medicine, occupational health and
public health. I am actively involved in tobacco control since 1979,
when I became head of the department of social and preventive medicine.

Starting in 1962, following the publication in
Great Britain of the Royal college of Physicians report indicting
tobacco in death and disease - the first such national study, I had
been an active advocate for tobacco control and other public health and
consumer protection regulation, first, as counsel to the consumer
protection-minded Democratic leadership of the Senate Commerce
Committee, then, as a Democratic Commissioner and Chairman of the
Federal Trade Commission.

May I ask you to introduce yourself ?
Stephen Sugarman: I am a law professor at the University of
California at Berkeley, where I have taught for 30 years. I teach about
personal injury law and in our social justice program.. In 1989, Bob
Rabin from Stanford Law School and I put together a team of California
scholars to study various sociological, public health, political, and
legal issues concerning smoking.

May I ask you to introduce yourself ?
BD: I graduated from the University of Virginia in 2001 and began
work as the Consumer Associate for the Massachusetts Public Interest
Research Group (MASSPIRG) in August of that same year. One part of the
Consumer Program's platform is to ensure product safety. Cars have
seatbelts and airbags, toys are manufactured so they do not pose
choking hazards to children; cigarettes should meet basic fire safety
standards just like any other product.

May I ask you to introduce yourself ?
I'm Kori Titus, director of STARS and Thumbs Up! Thumbs
Down!, two projects designed to work with the entertainment industry to
reduce the unintentional glamorization of tobacco depictions in movies
and television. I have been the director of these projects since 1999
when I became intimately involved with tobacco control. Prior to that,
I had been a volunteer at the American Lung Association of
Sacramento-Emigrant Trails (ALASET) for a number of years working on
numerous agency priorities.

I am Laurie Storey-Manseau and I have been
an American Cancer Society volunteer since 1988. I am the principal of
a marketing and public relations agency, and am a graduate of Syracuse
University (undergrad) and the University of New Hampshire (grad). I
live and work in Hopkinton, New Hampshire. I became involved in tobacco
control when, at the age of 10, I tried to convince my aunt to quit
smoking by offering to give up something myself if she would quit.

My name is Peter Jacobson and I am an Associate
Professor in the Department of Health Management and Policy at the
University of Michigan School of Public Health. About 10 years ago, I
became interested in tobacco control research, largely because of the
health toll from cigarette smoking. My first project dealt with the
political evolution of tobacco control laws.

Chris Cartter: I supervised the original implementation of QuitNet

I formally began my commitment to tobacco
prevention and control in 1982 with the American Cancer Society,
California Division, Tobacco and Cancer Department. Prior to that, I
had been simply a reformed smoker and staunch anti-tobacco activist.
