Georgina Lovell: My casual interest in tobacco industry fraud became
more structured following Workers Compensation Board hearings in
British Columbia where I presented a five-page brief in support of
proposed smoke-free workplaces.

Louise Labrie: My name is Louise Labrie, I am a health promotion
specialist with the public health department of Montréal-Center. I have
been active in tobacco control for 15 years. It is a real passion. I
have been involved with the making of several anti-tobacco media
campaigns for the Québec Province Health Department.

May I ask you to introduce yourself ?
Fernand Turcotte: I am a medical specialist in preventive medicine
and public health. I have been trained at the Université de Montréal,
and Harvard University. I have joined the medical faculty of Université
Laval in 1971, teaching preventive medicine, occupational health and
public health. I am actively involved in tobacco control since 1979,
when I became head of the department of social and preventive medicine.
I hope you did not lose any loved ones in the tragedy in New
York and Washington DC. In this context it is difficult to keep the
focus on tobacco control but we are trying. Our heart goes to all who
suffer.

Cynthia Callard: I have worked on tobacco issues intermittently
since the mid 1980s - the past six years with Physicians for a
Smoke-Free Canada (PSC). PSC was established in 1985 by an energetic
group of Canadian physicians who wanted to ensure there was a constant
and watchful eye on public policy issues concerning tobacco use.

I grew up in New England in the 1950s and naively
smoked Marlboros for 15 years, throughout my college and graduate
school years and when first teaching, even smoking in the classroom in
1966-1970. I teach in a business school (UBC, Vancouver), sharing my
training in marketing, consumer behavior and advertising.

May I ask you to introduce yourself?
I was born and raised in Saskatchewan in western
Canada and did undergraduate studies in Saskatoon before moving to New
York City to pursue a masters degree in psychology. I moved to Ottawa
in 1990 to work for a member of parliament.
I started working in tobacco control in 1992 when I answered a
newspaper ad calling for an "advocate" for the Canadian Council on
Tobacco Control.

May I ask you to introduce yourself?
During the 1970s, I worked on Long Range Health
Planning in the Canadian Health Department. We analyzed all the public
health problems that Canada faced. No matter how we did the
calculations, tobacco always came up as the most serious public health
problem in the country.
Heidi and Louis are co-directing the Quebec Coalition for Tobacco Control.

Heidi Rathjen: I was a student in civil engineering at Montreal's Ecole
Polytechnique when, on December 6, 1989, a man entered the building and
opened fire with a paramilitary weapon, ending the lives of 14 of my
fellow female students. I chose to devote myself to the cause of
firearms control and, with Wendy Cukier, founded the Coalition for Gun
Control.

I am the editor of Tobacco News Online, a daily digest of news dealing
with all tobacco- and smoking-related issues and questions. The primary
focus is on Canadian news, as the majority of my readers are in this
country.
