Michael McCloskey has spent more than 40 years of his life with the Sierra Club. He talks about the book he just published about his experience. This presentation was recorded at the Elliott Bay Bookstore. Listen (1 hour 20 minutes)
Mary Doria Russell gave a presentation full of energy to a packed audience at Eagle Harbor Bookstore. I hope our recording (23 min) will allow you to enjoy her dynamism and her humor. Unfortunately she inadvertently dropped the lapel mike after about 15 minutes: raise the volume and you should be able to hear the end of her talk. We did not post the question and answer session: we still have to figure how to record the questions. Sorry! Thank you to Eagle Harbor Books for the hospitality. Listen

October 18: "How does an author know what questions to ask in an interview?" This was the theme chosen by the Field's End Writers' Roundtable (2 min). The guest speaker was Fred Moody , former managing editor of the Seattle Weekly and author -most recently- of Seattle and the demons of ambition, a love story (27 min). Fred shared many interesting stories and provided useful advice. His talk was followed by a questions and answers session (14 min). Our recording of this part is not exhaustive due to a problem with the recorder but we were able to fix it and capture a very interesting comment about the important role of silence (4 min). Thanks to Field's end and Fred for this most interesting evening. More info: www.fieldsend.org
September 27: Hunter Lovins President, Natural Capitalism, delivers the luncheon plenary presentation at the Profitable Sustainability Conference in Seattle(36 min): Natural capitalism, the key to competitiveness and prosperity. Luncheon means forks, knifes and plates noises since she did not wear a lapel mike (our fault). But this is (as usual with Hunter) a powerful speech. The presentation was followed by a 2 minutes wrap up and a questions and answers sessions(9 min).
September 23: Helen Thayer talks at Eagle Harbor Bookstore about her book, Three among the wolves: a couple and their dog live a year with wolves in the wild (67 min). This was an amazing presentation and we hope you'll enjoy listening to it even without seeing the magnificent slides that came with it. A great thanks to Eagle Harbor Bookstore for a great evening. September 2: Jo Ann Ridley and Mary Randlett talk at Eagle Harbor Bookstore about their book, San Juan Islands Journal (32 min). Jo Ann read a few funny pages about Shaw Island while Mary showed and commented a series of magnificent black and white photographs taken at the top of Mount Constitution. Since the pictures have not been published I cannot refer you to a website. One more reason for you to come to the bookstore and look at their book. Thanks again to Eagle Harbor Bookstore for a great show. For more information: I recommend this page about Mary Randlett Your favorite bookstore's site: www.eagleharborbooks.com
August 17: Linda Lawrence Hunt talks at Grieg Hall, Sons of Norway in Poulsbo about her book Bold Spirit: Helga Etsby's forgotten walk across Victorian America (61 min).
The amazing story of two women's (a 36 years old mother -of 8 children- accompanied by her 18 years old daughter) trek from Spokane to New York. How it was later kept secret from the grand and great grand children and how it has been reconstructed by Linda Lawrence Hunt. A tribute to the strength of American women. Thanks to Kitsap Regional Library and our local independent bookstores for this fascinating presentation. The hall was packed (mostly with ladies) and I hope the sound will be good enough for you to keep listening. Sorry about the background noise from the climatisation... August 12: David Shields talks at Eagle Harbor Bookstore about his book Body Politic, The great American sports machine (74 min).
A conversation with David about what sports meant to him and how he now is less involved while still hoping for a new team he could root for. Food for thought about what fans get out of the stars and what myths are at play. Thanks again to Eagle Harbor Bookstore for this stimulating evening! August 5: Earl Emerson talks at Eagle Harbor Bookstore about his new book Pyro (60 min). Earl is a Seattle fire fighter who picked up this career so he could also write in his spare time and supports his family until his books were accepted for publication. That took years of perseverance. He speaks very freely and candidly about his writing and how he imagined the plot and the characters for Pyro. He also discusses the coincidence of serial arsons in Seattle that started right when Pyro -a story about serial arsons in Seattle!- was launched a few days ago. Earl is a great speaker and he touches on burning issues. Thanks again to Eagle Harbor Bookstore for inviting him! July 30: Robert Kurson talks at Eagle Harbor Bookstore about his new book Shadow Divers(62 min). Unfortunately I arrived a little late so you'll miss the beginning of the talk. When the recording starts he is speaking about what happens when they first discovered the U Boat. RK is a real story teller and I very much enjoyed the hour spent listening to his description of the heroes of his book and his explanation of his own fascination for this amazing story. Dive in!
