Chilecigarettes1 Liz Borkowski wrote this very interesting post about Miguel. Good pictures too. The questions that come to my mind are: why did they pick up only one person? only one picture? How did they choose him rather than someone else? How long do they intend to keep this image? Do they plan to change it after a "while"?

Chilean graphic warnings

Chile1_1 In August 2006, Chile adopted a new tobacco law which, in addition to establishing smoking restrictions in public places, banning advertising and the promotion of 'light' brands, required that all cigarette packages display a graphic health warning that occupies 50% of the package surface.
The requirement for new health warnings came into effect on November 12, 2006.  (Source: Physicians for a smokefree Canada)

In India Graphic Warnings Are Indefinitely Postponed

Focus1Our friend Hemant Goswami informs us that once again it has been proved that the tobacco lobby has a better control of the Indian Health Ministry (like in many others places across the world) than the tobacco control and public health organizations. In an unfortunate development, the rules which made it mandatory to carry pictorial warnings covering 50% of the tobacco product packages have been postponed for an unknown time period.

New Graphic Warnings Start Appearing in Australia

Austharmbabiesback An image of a fragile newborn caught up in a tangle of tubes will soon be appearing on cigarette packs across Australia.
The confronting shot is part of the next series of seven graphic images and will be pasted on packs starting this november.

Uruguay approves graphic warnings for cigarette packages

U2etshumanicida The Ministry of Public Health of Uruguay announced in November 2005 that in April 2006 pictograms (pdf) will be incorporated into tobacco packages, with messages about quitting smoking and about seconhand smoke. A spokesman for the ministry explained that pictograms will cover 50% of both principal sides of the package. Each side will carry a different pictogram.

The text of the warning is: Humanicide.
More than 4000 chemical substances, of which 50 cause cancer. Your air is mine too. Respect it.

In Turkey Health Warnings Said to Reduces Tobacco Consumption 10%

Turkey A 10% percent drop in tobacco consumption in the first four months of this year is a sign that smokers have been affected by the “smoking kills” labels on cigarette packets.

The 678 million packet consumption last year between January and April, decreased to 612 million packets this year.
