Exhibit and seminar about graphic warnings in Brussels

Invitation "The Power of Communications Against Tobacco" is an exhibition and seminar being held in Brussels from 31 January to 2 February 2007 at the Bibliothèque Solvay.
The aim of the exhibition is to highlight the importance that better communications and powerful images can have in the fight against tobacco. In organising this event, we have the support of Jules Maaten, MEP and EP Rapporteur on the European legislation introducing large and optional pictorial warnings on tobacco products (the latter now being introduced in Belgium) and Markos Kyprianou, Commissioner for Health.

Burson-Marsteller is the supporting agency for “The Power of Communications Against Tobacco”

Both will be attending the official opening of the Exhibition on 31 January along with Nadia Collot, Director of the film The Tobacco Conspiracy. The event is supported by Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis.

The exhibition will be devoted to displaying the warning photographs selected for use in Belgium as well as others which may be used in other EU member states in the future. Also displayed will be pictures currently in use around the world such as those from Canada, Singapore, Australia and Thailand.

Alongside the exhibition, a seminar will be held on the morning of 1 February and will bring together representatives of the European Commission, members of the European Parliament, member state representatives, health NGOs working on anti-tobacco campaigns as well as the pharmaceutical industry, with the aim of exchanging ideas, know-how and experience and looking forward to the future.

The seminar sessions will be moderated by Luk Joossens of the European Cancer Leagues. Several speakers will be present to explore key questions such as “Where are we now?” and “What do we do next?” on fighting the scourge of tobacco including Jules Maaten MEP, Gerard Hastings of the University of Sterling and the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Project (ITC), Garfield Mahood, Executive Director of the Non-Smokers’ Rights Association and Karine Gallopel from the University of Rennes. Here is a link to the EU pictorial warnings  (but you have to register to see them). The warnings (in French) arealso available on the side of our blog.

Comments

I have just read:
"Burson-Marsteller is the supporting agency for “The Power of Communications Against Tobacco”"

Well, Burson-Marsteller is also responsible for a well-known document:
BURSON MARSTELLER
SOCIAL ACCEPTABILITY PROGRAM
INITIAL RECOMENDATIONS FOR SPAIN
Prepared by Burson-Marsteller
Madrid, January 1992

This agency seems to have been a useful tool for the tobacco industry. Now it does the opposite. It is like selling arms to both warring sides.

This is my blog about tobacco. It is in spanish, but I guess it can be translated with a program:
