The possibility of South Africa hosting the 3rd Conference of the Parties (COP3) to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control is almost certain if the current support being enjoyed by the country among other countries bidding for the hosting right is anything to go by.
As the meeting progresses this afternoon in Bangkok the committee B (Budget and financial mechanisms) has adopted South Africa as next host country. The proposal of South Africa came from the AFRO region which had Tuesday unanimously given overwheming support to South Africa. "We want to support the South Africa bid and want this passed to the Bureau."
"The country is no doubt the best for COP3 and we are throwing our weight behind it," said the Portugal delegate. The representative of Iran said, "The country, the people, the facilities are excellent and will give us one of the best COPS ever attended". There are conditions for hosting COP in any country, which include financial support by host the country as well as choice of host city. There are speculations that the COP 3 will be next October.
