FOROYAA newpaper, `founded over two decades ago, is one of Gambia’s leading and widely-read newspapers renowned for its impartiality and professionalism. It is a close partner of WHO and the health sector in general being part of the association of health journalists.
It has also created a health desk and a vibrant health and nutrition column exclusively devoted to reporting various health issues including tobacco. But tobacco dominated its activities during the past couple of years particularly during 2007.
Its activities have now been scaled up from being mere reporting to being anti-tobacco activist. The paper boldly declared all its premises smoke free since 2007, a move that resulted in some of its employees quitting smoking. This activity is now directed at the wider Gambian community, bringing tobacco control into the overall national health agenda through interviews, advocacy and aggressive reporting. It has in the recent past published a series of articles linking tobacco control to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
