Pr. Peter A. Odhiambo (right on the picture) is given the award by Dr Luis Gomes Sambo, WHO regional Director for Africa. Peter Odhiambo is a Professor of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He has been actively involved in tobacco control since for more than 30 years now. He is the founder member of the Kenya Cardiac Society an organization that mounted the initial advocacy for tobacco control in Kenya over 20 years ago.
He is the former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Nairobi University. He has actively participated in the national taskforce for the drafting of the Tobacco Control Bill since 1998 and actively lobbied for its successful passing into law in September 2007.
Pr. Odhiambo has special interest in thoracic and cardiovascular medicine and surgery where he has been a consultant at Kenyatta National Hospital as well as a lecturer at the University of Nairobi Medical School. He is the pioneer of open heart surgery in Kenya. Over the years, he has done a lot of work on cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. He has published over 90 papers on various surgical issues and over 10 papers on issues of tobacco and health. He is the founder editor of the African Journal of Hospital Medicine (Medicom). He has been the Chairman of the National Tobacco Initiative Committee (NTFIC), a taskforce made up of government departments, non- governmental organizations, civil society groups, professional associations and individuals involved in the fight against the tobacco epidemic in Kenya.
