Cigarette manufactures in Uganda, will alter the mild health warning on packs, to clearly tell smokers of the danger of contracting incurable diseases through consuming tobacco products.
The Uganda National Bureau of Standards has directed cigarette makers to display in their packaging that smokers face certain death by consuming their product.
The warning that manufacturers are to imprint on packets within the next six months will read, Cigarette smoking causes lung cancer, heart diseases and death” as opposed to the current warning, Cigarette smoking can be harmful to your health. Anti-tobacco activists have been lobbying the government to change the labelling to discourage people from smoking. The Environment Action Network, headed by Phillip Karugaba who also lobbied for banning of public smoking commended UNBS on the move.
Public smoking is illegal in Uganda.
