One more supermeeting involving plenty of dignitaries (30 "global tobacco control advocates") coming to Kampala from far away: at what cost and with what impact? Beyond the announcement (below) we have found zero substantial information about this meeting. The CTCA's site does not contain any (yet) nor the others. After this comment was posted we received a pdf document that provides a little more information, but not much. For instance, no detailed financial data are provided. Not that any of the other group is very transparent about their finances, but that would be a step in the right direction as far as transparency and public accountability are concerned.
Thirty global Tobacco Control Advocates are convening in Kampala from July 4-5th for the first ever annual performance review for the Centre for Tobacco Control in Africa (CTCA).
The review Workshop provides an opportunity to engage the broader tobacco control community in reviewing CTCA’s achievements in the past year, prioritizing areas of focus for the next year, and strengthening working relationships for advancing the tobacco control agenda in Africa.
In the first phase of the process, an external review was carried out by an Independent Organization, EnCompass LLC, while the CTCA also evaluated itself internally.
The presentation of the findings of this initial process will therefore form part of the agenda for the review workshop. The global partners will then have an opportunity to make their own assessment of the Centre’s operations in the past year.
It is expected that by the end of the workshop, partners will propose concrete strategies for Strengthening CTCA’s Performance and Contributions to Tobacco Control in Africa. The Tobacco Control advocates are also expected to devise ways of Strengthening Partnerships for Tobacco Control in Africa.
The participants include tobacco control experts from; WHO/ TFI, WHO AFRO, WHO Uganda Country office, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), CTCA steering committee members from all the five target countries of Angola, Mauritania, South Africa, Kenya and Uganda.
Other participants include representatives from Africa Tobacco Control Consortium (ATCC), Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids ( CTFK), International Development Research Centre (IDRC), American Cancer Society, Africa Tobacco Control Regional Initiative (ATCRI), African Tobacco Control Alliance (ATCA), Africa Tobacco Control Regional Initiative (ATCRI), Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, EnCompass LLC, International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, and the East African Community Secretariat.
The review workshop will be proceeded by a CTCA’s Steering Committee meeting from July 6-7, 2012 which will focus on the key decisions needed, based on the outcomes of the workshop. The Steering Committee Members will also have a critical analysis of the Centre’s strategic documents: the Strategic Plan, Business Plan and the Performance Monitoring Plan.
