Revisiting the grants awarded by IDRC it is interesting to look at how Dakar based CRES has been significantly funded to research the taxation of tobacco products in West Africa. Of course many meetings were organized including one in Paris and a 3 day conference in Ougadougou. But is any specific information available on line? I have not found any -yet-.
Taxation of Tobacco Products in West Africa
In December 2007, Research for International Tobacco Control (RITC) undertook
an initiative to understand the critical factors that determine the success of
the anti-tobacco campaign in sub-Saharan Africa. This initiative, called the
African Tobacco Situational Analysis (ATSA) was financed under project 105819,
and involved several research institutions in Africa. This project aims to
breach a major gap revealed by the situational analysis: the failure to take
advantage of taxation in the anti-tobacco campaign. This project aims to
contribute to the establishment of conditions favourable to the adoption by West
African countries of new regulations enabling an effective and significant rise
in the price of tobacco in order curb consumption in the region. It will do so
by producing 15 country profiles and a regional profile of tobacco taxation, and
by organizing a regional workshop on tobacco taxation in the countries that make
of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
