$ 3million for 20 Scholarships grants for students from Malawi funded by the Foundation for a Smoke-Free World

The Foundation announced the new program on July 22, 2019. You can read here the press release and we also reproduced the text below. I emailed Nicole Bradley about the budget (not mentioned in the press release): she replied this is a three year, $3 million program. The deadline to apply is October 17, 2019.

The grants are managed by the US based Institute for International Education.

Launch of the Foundation for a Smoke-Free World: what to think of famed tobacco control advocate Derek Yach funding by Philip Morris?

Derek Yach launched this new foundation with the financial support of Philip Morris to the tune of $ 1 billion in 12 years. What do you think? What could it mean for Africa? Let us remember Derek is from South Africa. Matt Myers of Tobacco Free Kids focuses on Philip Morris without once mentioning Derek's history as a worldwide tobacco control advocate nor the questions around quitting or the eventual less toxicity of e-cigarettes as exposed by Derek in a video. As for the organization of this new foundation, at this point the only person mentioned is Derek except for the media contact person, Tom Langford, who is VP with a PR firm, Feinstein Kean Healthcare, an Ogilvy Company that lists as a client, the Vitality group, Derek's former employer and also a firm that worked for the tobacco industry.
