The second session of the Conference of the Parties to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) begins this Saturday 30 June and will run till Saturday 6 July in Bangkok, Thailand. The Conference of the Parties will convene to make decisions concerning the implementation of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Up for discussion is the action that was taken between the first and second session following the various decisions made at the first session of the Conference of the Parties that was held in February 2006, Geneva. Items on the agenda include:
-The adoption of guidelines on protection from exposure to tobacco smoke (Article 8). See here and here.
-Elaboration of templates for protocols on illicit trade in tobacco products and cross-border tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship.
-Elaboration of guidelines for the implementation of Article 9 (product regulation).
- The report of the study group on alternative crops to tobacco.
-Other technical, procedural and financial matters relating to the implementation of the treaty such as funding and financial support, program of work for the period 2008-2009; reporting and exchange of information and monitoring and reporting on implementation progress.
-Elaboration of guidelines for the implementation packaging and labeling of tobacco products (Article 11) and of Article 12 (education, communication training and public awareness).
-Election of officials.

There will also be lunch time seminars taking place during the course of the week and for the first time there will be an international NGO forum open to all just before the start of the Conference on Saturday 30 June at 13:00 to 15:30.
