The death clock which tracks minute by minute the number of tobacco related deaths worldwide since the opening of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) talks was unveiled Saturday afternoon.
The death clock, measuring more than 6ft in length, was unveiled revealing 33,053,998 lives lost due tobacco since the first working group for the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control on 25th October 1999. The moving ceremony was organized by the Framework Convention Alliance (FCA). High level speeches were delivered and several representatives of NGOs from different regions read statements in their native languages. As the Conference of the Parties goes underway this week and governments deliberate and make decisions concerning the implementation of the FCTC, may the ticking of the death clock be a reminder how lives are at stake and thus, how absolutely important it is to have strong, effective implementation of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
