Yesterday was an exciting day of the 2nd Conference of the Parties to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC COP2), Bangkok. Committee A unanimously agreed to adopt the draft guidelines on the protection from exposure to tobacco smoke (Article 8).
The text of the guidelines was not opened up for discussion and only slight changes were made to the preamble. These are the first guidelines of the Framework Convention on Tobacco on Control (FCTC) and they will be forwarded to the plenary for adoption in a few days. Over the past 100 days, over 500 organisations in civil society in 100 countries joined together in the Global Smokefree Partnership Global Voices Campaign urging governments to adopt these strong and effective Article 8 guidelines. The Global Voices Smokefree Status Report launched at this year's World No Tobacco Day, gives compelling evidence that 100% smoke-free policies are cost-effective, popular and save lives. A warm thank you to the delegates for this important, historic decision; to the working group for the good work and to all the individuals and organisations that voiced their tremendous support. May we translate this global momentum for 100% smokefree places into urgent local action.
