I decided to start this investigation of the Foundation for a Smoke-Free World by re-reading the book Derek Yach wrote about his own personal and professional journey that led to his deal with PMI and the creation of the FSFW: Project Unthinkable, a doctor's gamble to save millions of lives. The book was published in November 2018, but I think Derek ended his writing shortly after the official launch of the foundation as some events that took place in 2018 are not mentioned, like the story of Marian Jacobs who accepted to join the Board (page 210), then resigned in March 2018, "following pressures and personal attacks".
Strangely or maybe it's not so strange if one does not want to raise the awareness about it, the book got very little (if any) publicity. There is only one comment on Amazon and I don't think the author was interviewed anywhere or any review published. I find it more than strange for someone who negotiated with a huge multinational a 'philanthropic' deal worth almost one billion (on 12 years). Before I decided to read again the book I had looked at the 2019 990 form that had just been posted on FSFW's site, compared it with the 2018 990 form and found myself wondering about a series of things that made me wonder about how the foundation operates and sometimes uncomfortable. I then decided it was worth it to spend some time looking more closely and collecting/listing the questions I thought were legitimate to raise.
