Who is Jackie Tumwine?
What is HERO-UGANDA?
Jackie
Tumwine is a lawyer and tobacco control advocate. She is the founder
and Executive Director of Health and Environmental Rights Organisation
(HERO-Uganda)-an NGO active in tobacco control in Uganda. Jackie’s
research interests include tobacco and human rights, tobacco and
children, smoke-free legislation, media advocacy and tobacco control
policy. Jackie has participated in several national and international
conferences and workshops including presenting a paper at the just
concluded 13th World Conference on Tobacco or Health, July 2006,
Washington DC.
Health and Environmental Rights Organisation is a Non-Governmental
Organization whose aim is to protect and promote the right to health
and the right to a clean and healthy environment through research,
advocacy and sensitization. HERO-UGANDA’s current tobacco control
activities include media advocacy for the ratification the WHO
Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, for enforcement of smoke free
public places, stronger warning labels and introduction of ad bans.
Through its media advocacy initiatives, HERO-UGANDA adds tobacco
control to the agenda of international days e.g. International Human
Rights Day, Women’s’ day etc.
As a member of the Framework Convention Alliance (FCA),
HERO-UGANDA was present at the first Conference of the Parties to the
WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), Geneva, 2006.
HERO-UGANDA is also a member of Globalink, Global Partnerships for
Tobacco Control (GPTC), Network for Accountability of Tobacco
Transnationals (NATT) and the Uganda Tobacco or Health Forum.
