A Conversation With Bill McKibben

Unclesam2_2 Frustrated by political gridlock in Washington, writer Bill McKibben and some fellow Vermonters decided they had to do something to draw attention to the shrinking window of opportunity we have to curb global warming. So they began a seat-of-the-pants campaign that has caught fire and is now expected to produce, on April 14, 2007, the largest global warming demonstrations ever seen. OnEarth's George Black talks with him about how Step It Up 2007 is building a mass movement -- fast. LISTEN (7 min)

TXU Buyout Makes Utility Greener

Smokestacks200 Good news! NRDC's Climate Center Director David Hawkins tells Betsy how the two private equity firms who are in talks to buy energy giant TXU wanted to talk to Environmental Defense and NRDC about how they could satisfy rising public opposition to proposed coal power plants in Texas.
This is a major victory for grassroots organizing, and the blueprint is clear: citizens make themselves heard in the streets, online, on the air, and in their state capitols; public opposition brings stock prices down; corporations are then forced to meet environmental groups at the bargaining table. Americans, you helped save the air you breathe! LISTEN (11 min)

The Car 2.0

Citycar_1 NRDC Vehicles Policy Director Roland Hwang tells Betsy how when other countries come to the US to talk proactive environmental strategy, they are increasingly bypassing Washington for California: "California and Europe are moving forward together into the future, while Washington seems stuck in the past." Unlike the Bush Administration, which has long used China and India's inaction as an excuse for their own, California and Europe remained undeterred by cynicism or nearsightedness: Mandatory carbon and tailpipe standards in California and Europe promise to transform the automotive industry,  and the influential precedents that the world needs will be in place and ready for copy. PART ONE (11 min)
Picture Treehugger  Title from Boston Globe

Roland also shared with us one of the more succinct and cogent analyses of Ethanol that we have heard: "Not all ethanol is created equal, and if you want to help the environment, you have to use the ethanol in the right way. Here's what I mean...." PART TWO (7 min)

From Gale to Dick: same destructive policies

Sharon_buccino_2 Sharon Buccino, NRDC's Land Program Director talks about Gale Norton's legacy and what can be expected from Idaho Governor Dirk Kempthorne:
"Gale Norton is responsible for the destruction of public wildlands and key wildlife habitat. Her goal was to give away as many of our publicly owned resources as she could to the energy, timber and mining industries, and by that measure, she was very successful. But the Interior Department's job also is to protect our land, protect our drinking water sources, and protect the wildlife that makes that land home. She never took that part of her responsibility seriously.
Ms. Norton said she now is setting her sights on 'the private sector.' Unfortunately, her record suggests she has been working for private special interests all along." As for Dirk, "His abysmal environmental record as a senator and a governor speaks for itself. Dirk Kempthorne is Gale Norton in pants."  LISTEN (7 min)
