The UK government is set to highlight the addictive nature of cigarettes in a new advertising campaign. Running
for five weeks, the campaign will highlight how smokers get "hooked" on
cigarettes through gripping images that show smokers being violently
dragged by fishing hooks to their addiction.

The campaign will
be shown on TV, internet and billboards from January 1st 2007, hitting
smokers in time for their new year resolutions.
"We know that many smokers will be considering stopping smoking in January as part of their new year resolutions and in advance of the smoke-free legislation being implemented on July 1st 2007," said public health minister Caroline Flint.
"These adverts highlight the controlling nature of tobacco."
In one of the adverts, a smoker is dragged by a fishing hook to their usual smoking spot, while in another, a smoker is dragged off their normal route home to stop and buy a fresh pack of cigarettes.
Ms Flint says that British smokers consume over 5,000 cigarettes a year on average, with nicotine as the main culprit in keeping smokers "hooked".
"It is not just a habit, it is an addiction," she said.
