Rendez-vous with Eric Asche, Vice-President Marketing for the Legacy Foundation

Thank you Eric for taking the time to answer my questions. May I ask you to introduce yourself?

Eric Asche: I came to Legacy from advertising agency GSD&M in Austin, Texas. At GSD&M, I served as Account Director, working with the foundation on several advertising campaigns, including Bob Quits, Mary Quits, Great Start®, Circle of Friends®, as well as overall foundation branding efforts.

Smoke-Free Calgary

Surfing on Google I find this campaign organized by Calgary when they become smokefree in early 2007. But the campaign is about helping youth quit. The 4 ads are on the smokefreecalgary.com site and on YouTube. Interesting as they are "just" testimonies, ie quite easy and cheap to produce.

Lisa Cristia: A Victim of Second-Hand Smoke

Lisa is an American Cancer Society volunteer and a cancer victim of second-hand smoke. She tells her story in a clip you can watch on YouTube. It is part of the Smoke-Free Illinois campaign. The clip started airing on March 22.

More Legacy Films going to the movies

CDC is funding an extension of the Legacy program airing tobaco control spots in movie theaters. The spots are 1200 and Bodybags. I was unable to find a copy of 1200 on line.

Health Warnings Campaign: Which Disease?

This is the new TV campaign in New South Wales that airs from 12 April 2007 to end of June. Do you want heart disease or lung cancer? WATCH (MMC).

This site hosts a series of spots produced for the Rauchfrei campaigns in Germany. The most recent one aired during the Soccer World Cup in 2006. WATCH

Secondhand Smoke The Invisible Killer

Secondhand smoke is an "invisible killer", according to the new advertising campaign, launched by Public Health Minister Caroline Flint. The TV ad showing secondhand smoke during a wedding party ran from March 5 to April 8. WATCH (Globalink MMC) and on the GoSmokefree site.

Health Santé Canada on YouTube

It looks like Health Santé Canada has its own list of videos on YouTube that includes the TV ad about Make your home smoke free. WATCH in english or en français :)

The Singing Cow Boy Goes To The Movies

American Legacy takes the cow boy to the movies: more than 17,606 screens in 50 states will feature Singing Cowboy in an effort to counter the effects of smoking depictions in movies, which have been demonstrated to be a significant motivator for youth nationwide to smoke. The cow boy's name is Tom Cook he had a total laryngectomy 8 years ago. He is currently 46 years old. He smoked 3 packs a day for roughly 20 years and quit when he was 33. Five years later, at age 38, he was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer. His surgery removed his larynx (which we commonly call a voice box).

Don't Pass Gas: Two New Clips

In November 2006, Legacy and the Ad Council launched 2 new clips about secondhand smoke. They are available on the dont' pass gas site and and on You Tube. The problem I have with this presentation is that the smoker appears totally unconcerned about his own health and the other people don't seem either: taking it outside is considerate but I find the very light tone sort of makes it OK to smoke (as long as it is outside).
