In memory of Jean-Paul Signoret

This image was published in the French magazine l'Express in May 1995. It is a picture taken for Jean-Paul Signoret's last birthday. He died of lung cancer on March 6, 1995. It was accompanied by a letter he had co-written with his companion Michèle Affonso, on October 31, 1994, right after his surgery. He was 46 years old.

"Nous vous écrivons de l'hôpital cardio de Bron. Jean-Paul vient d'être opéré d'un cancer au poumon. J'ai eu bien du mal à le convaincre de ne plus fumer. Pourtant il a essayé. Il a mis des patchs qui coûtent d'ailleurs très chers; sans succès. Il a rechuté à chaque fois; il était trop dépendant à la nicotine. J'ai aussi essayé de convaincre mes enfants, sans succès. Les jeunes à l'école sont entraînés dans ce tourbillon infernal. Quel gâchis! Puis voilà, la catastrophe: 46 ans, cancer du poumon; il a fallu enlever la totalité d'un poumon. Lorsque le médecin lui a appris cette terrible nouvelle, il est retourné acheter des cigarettes, puis il a compris qu'il allait acheter sa mort. Il les a jetées dans la première poubelle qu'il a trouvée. On pleure sur le déficit de la sécurité sociale et, pourtant, on favorise la cause, la production de tabac augmente, le cancer du poumon aussi. Que fait-on pour arrêter cette machine infernale? Le tabac, on le sait, tue. On achète sa mort. On est consentant. Celle-ci est autorisée par la loi. Il y a beaucoup d'inconscience dans le fait de fumer. Les gens se détruisent eux-mêmes. Il faut sauver notre jeunesse: ils ont déjà le chômage, le sida et très bientôt le cancer du poumon. Un paquet par jour pendant vingt ans et vous êtes bon pour le développer." PS: Jean-Paul est mort le 6 mars 1995. Michelle a fondé en mai 1995 une association pour promouvoir la prévention et aider les fumeurs à arrêter de fumer: "Les Amis de Jean-Paul", devenus en 2002 l'Association d'aide aux victimes du tabagisme.
