Diane Horn hosts a public interest radio program entitled the sustainability segment on KEXP that airs at the typical 7 am on saturdays. Her guest last saturday was Donald Shoup, THE expert on parking issues. He explains the high cost of so called free parking and offers alternative strategies that should be considered for Winslow. Maybe Islandwood could invite Shoup for a conference (and some local consulting)?

Beach combers vs beach owners

An interesting decision in Michigan: Read   
The Michigan Supreme Court noted that “walking the beach below the ordinary high water mark is inherent in the exercise of traditionally protected public rights and falls within the scope of the public trust.”  The court added: “This activity remains subject to regulation, as is any use of the public trust.”

Seattle Audubon and KPLU Announce New Radio Series
BirdNote

The Seattle Audubon Society and KPLU-FM 88.5 today announced BirdNote, a new radio series featuring the rich sounds and intriguing ways of birds in the Pacific Northwest.

BirdNote is designed to transport listeners out of the daily grind and into the natural world.

A different BirdNote spot will air each week day from 8:58 to 9 a.m. on KPLU-FM 88.5 following NPR's Morning Edition show.

Winning the oil end game, by Amory Lovins

We are happy to be back with this recording of the conference given by Amory Lovins this Friday at Islandwood.
Amory who comes to the island to teach at the Bainbridge Graduate Institute created by Gifford Pinchot explained to a full house the argument of his most recent book, Winning the oil end game.
He showed how super-efficient cars could be built very rapidly, how alternate bio-fuels could be economically developed and energy wastes eliminated to the extent this country's oil dependency would disappear.

The death of environmentalism

Adam Werbach gave this speech about the death of environmentalism and the birth of the commons movement on December 8  in San Francisco at the Commonwealth Club.
A wake up call.
The club is also providing a number of digital recordings of past presentations that have been aired on more than 225 stations: an example the leaders of most environmental groups should emulate.
